Planning a wedding in Michigan? I know one vendor you want to cross off your list is your make up artist so I interviewed one of Grand Rapids BEST wedding make up artists. Get to know Katie, what it's like to work with her and learn a few tips!
Tell me a little about yourself and what you do…
"Hi there!! My name is Katie Marble and I am a 27 year old makeup artist living in Grand Rapids! I’ve specialized in bridal and special event makeup for the past 7 years, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I truly love what I do! Whenever I’m not working, I love to travel, spend time with my family, and read Colleen Hoover books (if you know, you know!!)".
Side note: I too am also a fan of Colleen Hoover books. I think my favorite is Verity or Reminders of Him
What made you want to start working in this field?
I’ve always had a love for beauty and creativity, so I enrolled at Douglas J and got my cosmetology license in 2015. I actually stumbled into doing bridal makeup almost by accident. Both my sisters were getting married that same year, and asked if I would do their hair and makeup. After that, a few of their bridesmaids reached out asking if I would do their weddings as well, and it really just snowballed from there! Eventually I stopped doing hair altogether, and decided to focus all my attention to strictly makeup. (And for good reason, I was never really great at hair lol)
What is the process like working with you?
When working with me, I always want to be sure that my clients are 100% happy and most importantly feel comfortable. I always make it a point to get to know you, your style, and your overall vision for your wedding day or event. A lot of my past clients always compliment me on my calming demeanor, and that’s always the biggest compliment for me!! Everyday life is stressful enough as it is, weddings especially, and if I can take off even the tiniest bit of that stress, then I know I’m definitely in the right line of work. I’m really just here to be your personal hype-girl!!
How far do you travel for bridal/ client make up?
I can travel wherever you need me! Anywhere within 15 miles of Grand Rapids is free, however any locations outside of that range will include a standard travel fee.
What are 3 tips you want every bride to know leading up to their wedding?
A few tips for future brides:
#1 Plan for more time getting ready than you think! There’s nothing worse than running behind schedule, so definitely be sure to ask for a makeup/hair schedule from your vendors to be sure you have plenty of time.
#2 Don’t try out any new skincare/botox/etc. within 2 weeks of your wedding date. You want to avoid any adverse reactions so your skin (and makeup) can be top-notch for your wedding day!
#3 If possible, be sure natural lighting and enough counter space is available at your venue when getting ready! However, if these 2 things are not possible, I always keep my makeup lights and an extra table on hand just in case.
What are your top makeup must-haves?
A few must-have items in my kit is pretty much anything from Makeup by Mario, Charlotte Tilbury setting powders, and a good setting spray!
What is your skin care routine like?
My own personal skincare routine consists of LOTS of hydration this time of year (I’m a true combo skin, so it’s very dry in some areas but also can get very oily throughout the day) so a hyaluronic acid serum is always a must, along with a water-based moisturizer during the day, SPF always!!! and a heavier cream or oil at bedtime. And of course, you can never forget eye-cream!
If you could only have 2 make up products what would they be?
Oof, such a tough question. If I HAD to choose only two, it would be a pair of lashes and concealer. My natural lashes are basically non-existent, so the more help a girl can get, the better!! Plus, who doesn’t love a good lash?!
For someone looking at potential makeup artists for their big day, what are questions they should be asking?
First, be sure to find an artist that has a similar makeup style to what you’re looking for. No one artist is the same, so definitely do your research and look through their portfolio/past work to be sure they’re a good fit for the type of makeup you’re wanting. Also, be sure to book with an artist that has a lot of experience! With bridal parties especially, you need someone who has worked with a variety of skin tones and textures to be sure everyone in your party will look (and most importantly) FEEL their absolute best. Makeup trials are also a great way to get a feel for if the artist is going to be a good fit for you, as you can gage their personality along with their expertise!
What is one piece of advice you have for a bride?
My advice is simple: Don’t forget to enjoy the process!! I know it can be easy to get caught up in wedding-day stress, but don’t forget that this is going to be one of the happiest days of your life to look back on. Take a few moments to really just take it all in. Getting ready for your wedding should be fun! Let everyone else take on the heavy stuff, and just enjoy getting pampered surrounded by the people you love!Where can people connect with you? (best way to inquire/social tags/website/contact info?)
